Fix: User Profile Service Failed The Logon Windows 10

It’s worth noting that this error could just occur randomly. Most of the time, a simple restart of the PC would fix it. So, try to restart your computer first and see if the problem persists. If it shows the the user profile service failed the sign-in windows 10 error again, follow the solution below.

We will attempt to make some changes to the registry. Please follow the steps carefully. Incorrectly modifying registry may cause serious problems. If possible, back up your registry before editing.

We will edit the registry in safe mode. So, boot your Windows 10 to safe mode first. If you need help, follow this guide: How to enter safe mode in Windows 10. When you’re in safe mode, follow the steps below.

    1. Go to Windows search / start menu.
    2. Type regedit and open it.How to open regedit to fix user profile cannot be loaded
    3. In the registry editor, navigate to the following subkey.
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
    4. Under the ProfileList folder, look for folder with name that begin with S-1-5 followed by long numbers. Click on the folder.User profile service failed the logon Windows 10
    5. Then, from the right pane, double-click on ProfileImagePath.
    6. Check if the user profile path shown matches your user profile. If you see multiple S-1-5, check each one of them to find the correct S-1-5 which shows the correct user profile path in ProfileImagePath. Follow the rest of the instruction below.Check your User profile service failed the logon Windows 10

If you have two S-1-5 folders which have the same name (that both matches your user profile) and one of them ended with .bak in its name, you have to rename it to without .bak.

But, to do this we will have to first rename the other folder that without .bak to something else, because two folders with the same name cannot co-exist. Rename the S-1-5 folder without .bak to something like .123.

S-1-5-21-xxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxxx-xxxx.123
S-1-5-21-xxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxxx-xxxx.bak

Then, on the folder that ended with .bak, remove the .bak from its name.

S-1-5-21-xxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxxx-xxxx
S-1-5-21-xxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxxx-xxxx.123

On the .123 folder you’ve renamed earlier, rename it to .bak.

S-1-5-21-xxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxxx-xxxx
S-1-5-21-xxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxxx-xxxx.bakRename user profile in registry to fix service failed logon Win10
